Attorney Aaron Jones was featured in the October 2024 edition of The Iowa Lawyer for being a newly elected officer for the Iowa State Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division. Aaron was asked about what he's looking forward to during his time as a YLD officer, why he chose to give his time to YLD, and what he enjoys doing in his spare time. From The Iowa Lawyer:
What are you looking forward to most during your year as YLD Secretary? I am most looking forward to advancing solutions to some of the challenges facing the Iowa legal community, particularly the growing attorney shortage across the state, which impacts civic engagement, an equitable and independent judiciary, and access to justice. As YLD Secretary, I aim to help develop initiatives that support and retain young lawyers while also inspiring future generations to pursue law-related careers. Programs like mock trial are powerful tools for rejuvenating the pipeline of future attorneys by sparking students’ interest in the legal profession. I am excited to collaborate with ISBA officers on innovative strategies to engage young talent and encourage them to see a future in Iowa’s legal landscape.
Why have you chosen to give your time to YLD? I chose to invest my time in the YLD because I believe in the transformative power of community involvement and professional development. Without the mock trial program, I—and countless other Iowa attorneys—would not be practicing law today. I continue to see firsthand how organizations like YLD can shape the careers and lives of young lawyers by providing support, resources, and a sense of belonging. I want to pay it forward by contributing to the growth and success of my peers. Together, we can continue to drive positive change within the legal community through initiatives like mock trial, mentorship programs, and community outreach.
When not practicing law, where are you most likely to be found? You can probably find me unwinding in a billiards hall, enjoying live music at one of Des Moines' many venues, or exploring the city's vibrant social scene. I love connecting with the incredible people who make Iowa such a great place to live, whether it's over a drink at a local bar or discovering a hidden gem of a restaurant. For me, it’s all about celebrating the community and the people who bring it to life.
